To successfully lift a heavy package, do you lift it just with just your pinkie fingers?  No, not unless you really want to hurt yourself.   You bring in your strong muscles – the quadriceps, the gluteal and abdominal muscles. The pinkie fingers are there and doing their bit – perhaps some balancing or dangling a key.

And to successfully do the lifting of change I believe it is just as important to bring in the strong muscles.  So many people use the equivalent of the pinkie finger to try bring about change  – what I refer to as will power or the conscious mind.   “However, neuroscience has now established that the conscious mind runs the show, at best, only about 5 percent of the time. It turns out that the programs acquired by the subconscious mind shape 95 percent or more of our life experiences.” 1

Many people come to see me about problematic habits they experience that to an outside observer look voluntary, for instance smoking, vaping, over drinking, over eating, gambling.  Yet for that person, in that moment, it does not feel voluntary from the inside.  These are examples of unhelpful programs run by the subconscious mind.

Hypnosis works with the subconscious mind, the strong muscles, to easily develop new and helpful automatic responses and habits.

Working predominantly with will power or the conscious mind to bring about change in many areas is using the wrong tool – the equivalent of using a hammer to screw in a nail.

When we use the right tool – it’s easy.
